Songdo-dong in Pohang
Songdo-dong in Pohang, named after Bundo Island and Songjeong-dong where the Hyeongsan River meets the East Sea, is famous for its Songdo Beach.
Since the 1920s, this area has been blessed with natural conditions. Once home to salt farms, Songdo-dong featured ideal beach conditions for a beach, with shallow waters up to 70m deep, a gently sloping sandy shore, and minimal tidal differences.
From the 1960s to the 70s, it was the most visited destination along the East Coast. The sandy beach, dense pine forest, and crystal-clear water attracted countless tourists every year.
At that time, accommodation facilities lined the beach, with daily summer crowds exceeding 100,000 people, and the streets at night glowing brilliantly with neon signs. It was a beloved tourist destination for many.
However, due to the influence of surrounding industrial complexes, including POSCO, significant beach erosion from typhoons that caused devastation in the 1980s, and sand dredging operations, the beach was ultimately closed in 2007.
Fortunately, Songdo Beach gained new life through restoration projects that began in 2012. With the installation of underwater breakwaters, sand replenishment, and the creation of a marine park, it is gradually regaining its past glory. The newly constructed coastal roads, plazas, and various cultural events are opening up a new future for Songdo. Now, Songdo-dong awaits Korean and foreign visitors, residents, and energetic new inhabitants!
